There are two common ways to apply for social security disability benefits. The first is by filling out an application for social security disability benefits online at ssa.gov. The second is by calling the Social Security Administration and making an appointment to apply over the phone. We generally recommend that you use the online application process. This is because it is easier to provide all of the relevant details, which makes it more likely that you will get the award of benefits you need.
Online Application: The online application is going to ask you for your contact info and a description of your physical and mental conditions that are causing your inability to work. You will also need the names and addresses of all of your doctors. Include the medical facilities you have gone to such as the place where you got your MRI done or had other testing done. The online app isn’t too difficult, and the good part is that you can save your progress along the way. You don’t have to do it all at one time.
Call In Process: The call-in process is similar, if you choose that option. Instead of typing in your answers, you just tell the SSA person all of the answers and they type it in for you. If you choose this method, you have to have all of your information right in front of you because it’s a one time thing. You can’t save your place to go look up information or to finish it the next day. You have to do it all right then and there.
Obviously, you can see that there may be a lack of information in the call-in process. The online process is more complete.
Once the application is filed, it will take 30 to 90 days to get an answer. Don’t get your hopes up just yet. The vast majority of these applications are denied and you will have to file an appeal.
